Following the rape of a 17-year-old student by two men in Puducherry on Wednesday, the Puducherry government has enforced steps in preventing harassment of girl students. The decision came after a meeting between Education Minister T. Thiyagarajan and principals from various schools discussing the safety measures for students by implementing guidelines in schools.
The guidelines include: overcoats for girls, separate buses for schoolboys and schoolgirls, ban on mobile phone in campuses and restricted interaction of girls and boys.
Many principals voiced over the decision of separate buses since the boys and girls sat in the bus even before the end of the class.
“Moreover when the girls and boys travel together , they often did not get off the bus even when their stop arrives,” said G.Ragesh Chandra, Secretary of Education.
He also said that these guidelines were meant for both private and government schools and a similar meeting will be held for college principals next week.
